Dear Tribal Citizens, It has come to our attention that there is an inaccuracy circulating on social media in regard to the August General Council Meeting. To clarify, we are currently working with the executive team at Colusa Indian Community Council to determine availability of the meeting space for a September meeting. It was the hope that our Rancheria Community Building renovation project would have been complete by this time, so that we could have had a grand opening, rededication and celebration with everyone, we are hopeful that it will be done soon and we can move forward with those celebration plans. In the meantime we will have to wait for notification from our sister tribe on the space availability, when we have confirmation we will be sending out Meeting Notices and a post to the Tribal Facebook page will go up. Thank You for your attention and understanding.

****For Immediate Release****07/02/2024We have received notification today that the Interior Board of Indian Appeals, (IBIA) has upheld a decision by the Regional Director of the Pacific Region of the Bureau of Indian Affairs to terminate the Lease of our lands on Cortina Rancheria by CIWMI based on the fact that they have failed to build the project or even obtain the necessary permits to build the project. This decision is great news to hear for our Land, our Ancestors and Future Generations. We look forward with hope and fresh eyes towards a brighter future for our people.IBIA Decision Link: www.oha.doi.gov/IBIA/Ibiadecisions/70ibia/70ibia043.pdfInterior Board of Indian Appeals (“IBIA”)“Cortina Integrated Waste Management, Inc. v. Pacific Regional Director, Bureau of Indian Affairs. 70 IBIA 43 (06/27/2024)”Quote: “Seventeen years ago, the Nation and Appellant struck a deal: the Nation would let Appellant build and operate a landfill on the Nation’s land, and Appellant would pay the Nation rent and a share of the landfill’s revenue. Seventeen years later, that landfill has not been built, Appellant has not obtained any of the permits needed to build or operate the landfill, the Nation has not received any rent or revenues, and the landfill is still years away from completion. About two thirds of the Nation’s lands have been locked up in this profitless deal for nearly two decades. Not surprisingly, the Nation wants out of the Lease. The Regional Director has the authority, both under BIA’s regulations and the terms of the Lease itself, to cancel (or 70 IBIA 48 “terminate”) this Lease if Appellant violates its terms. The Nation asked the Regional Director to cancel the Lease, and the Regional Director concluded that Appellant violated the terms of the Lease by failing to build and begin operating this landfill within a reasonable time. (The Regional Director also concluded that Appellant violated the Lease by failing to provide certain notices required by its terms, which we address below in section II.)We affirm the Regional Director’s decision that Appellant violated the Lease by failing to timely perform. For the reasons explained below, the Regional Director did not err when she concluded that (1) this Lease required Appellant to build and begin operating this landfill within a reasonable time, (2) Appellant has not and cannot fulfill that obligation, and none of Appellant’s excuses justify its failure to provide timely performance, and (3) this breach constituted both a “material breach” and a “breach of a material term” that justified cancellation of the Lease under BIA’s regulations and the terms of the Lease.” End Quote:
117 years ago today "June 26th 1907", the Secretary of the Interior, took the first parcel of 160 acres into trust creating the Cortina Rancheria for the use of the Cortina Band of Wintun Indians, now known as the Kletsel Dehe Wintun Nation. Tribal Nation's have existed since time-in-memorial, but marking our official relationship with the United States Government we remember where we came from and look forward to creating a good and healthy future our own people and all people whom we meet in our day to day lives and travels. Happy Establishment Day!
